One Pissed Off Customer

Dear Whirlpool,

On May 31, 2015 the Whirlpool Duet Steam washer that I paid close to $1500 for (with stand) a little over a year ago,  stopped working.  It had a load of towels in it that were soaked when I opened the door.  So I tried the drain and spin option on the washer and the door locked and then remained locked with a code flashing on the time display.

After my husband and I getting out the owners manual and googling whatever info we could it was late, we were tired, and the washer would have to be dealt with the following day.

On June 1, 2015 I put in a call to your service department.  It took me about 10 minutes going through all the prompts of press or say this for that and so on.  I am a mom with 4 kids.  It’s hard to spend 5 minutes on the phone with a family member let alone 10 minutes trying to get through your prompts and waiting for a person to get on the line.

After verifying all the information with the gentleman on the phone I then had to give the phone to my husband so that the man could then walk my husband through the steps to get the washing machine door unlocked so that we could get the serial and model numbers off the inside of the door.  This took about another 10 minutes.

Then the gentlemen put us on hold while he called the appliance place located here in our small little town to set up a service call.  Only he didn’t set anything up….instead he just told us that they would be calling us.  The rest of the day went by….no call.  The next morning…still no call.  So then my husband called them only to be informed that they couldn’t be here until June 17,2015 and here it was only June 2,2015.  So please explain to me how a family of 6 people are now supposed to go without a washing machine (which runs pretty much every day) for almost 3 weeks?!?!

I would also like for you to explain to me how a washer that is only 14 months old suddenly had a burnt up motor?  (Yes my husband figured that much of it out on his own)  All of my appliances in this house are Whirlpool and I have now had problems with the refrigerator, the dishwasher, the stove top, and the washing machine.  Luckily the problems with all the others fell under the one year, manufacture warranty.  But wow…for as much as I paid for all those appliances you would think that they would be a better product.   As each of these appliances goes out I will be replacing them with KENMORE.  A brand that I had in my previous house and not once in 8 years did I have a problem with their washing machine.  I had to leave it in the house because we had to move a long distance and some things had to be left behind. But guess what… it still works because if it didn’t I would have heard from the new owners about it as they have gotten ahold of me for other things.  I still have the Kenmore refridgerator that I bought 10 years ago.  It’s in the garage as a back up fridge and works like a champ!  And as I write this very blog my clothes are being washed in my new Kenmore Elite Washer that I drove 4 hours round trip to pick up and who assured me that they will send a repairman from Reno in a reasonably timely manner if I should ever need one.

Now I am sure you are probably wondering if I cared for the piece of crap Whirlpool washing machine properly and let me assure you that I babied that machine more then I have ever babied an appliance in my life!  I only used the (he) brand detergent in it and I used the cleaning tablets and cleaning cycle 2-3 times a month.  Only once did the machine have to tell me it was time to use the cleaning tablets.

I don’t understand why a company as big and popular as yourself doesn’t have more ways of getting repairmen to us little people in this little town much faster then almost 3 weeks.  Reno is two hours away….why not send someone from there?  And not on my dime either.  You want to sell your products in Winnemucca, NV then make sure you can back them up!  I never had a return call to verify if we had been taken care of and only after tweeting on twitter did I get a response from you wanting my information that I had already given to you in the 20 minute phone conversation on JUNE 1, 2015!  Are you trying to tell me that it’s that hard for your corporation to find my information?  I also messaged you with my email and phone number but of course no reply.  Therefore I am writing this letter in blog form and will be plugging my story into any public social media outlet I possibly can so that other people will be informed on what brand NOT TO BUY when they are in need of new appliances.

I have decided to include these pictures of my stove that can’t be wiped with anything other then a damp soft rag because anything else scratches it.  These scratches have been there since about a month after we got it because my teenage son, who was trying to clean something off it, used a kitchen sponge.  Do you not realize that we are real people using your appliances?  They should be able to withhold some wear and tear.

PLEASE NOTE TO THOSE IN WINNEMUCCA:  I want to stress that in no way do I hold Philips Home Furnishings in anyway responsible for what is going on between me and Whirlpool.  Philips has always been very good to us and has great customer service.  They have fixed stuff before and even followed up to see how it was doing.  No complaints about them what so ever.  My problem is with Whirlpool Corporation.

  1. I never had any luck with Whirlpool either two dishwashers in three years, a fridge that didn’t last five years. Surprised you had any luck with Kenmore though Whirlpool makes that brand also. Good luck going forward!

    1. The Whirlpool Corporation is an American multinational manufacturer and marketer of home appliances, headquartered in Benton Charter Township, Michigan, United States, near Benton Harbor, Michigan.[2][3] The Fortune 500[4] company has annual revenue of approximately $20 billion, 100,000 employees, and more than 70 manufacturing and technology research centers on the world. The company markets Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Gladiator GarageWorks, Inglis, Estate, Brastemp, Bauknecht, Indesit and Consul. After acquiring the Maytag Corporation on March 31, 2006, the Whirlpool Corporation surpassed Electrolux to become “the largest home appliance maker in the world.”[5] this is copied straight from

  2. Call Sears for $39.00 a month they will fix any appliance in your home weather you purchased from them or not and that includes you air conditioner and heater. My washer went out and was fixed an working within 3 days. They do have a $60.00 fee you pay with each call. My washer was over $600.00 to fix cost me 60.00. Love Love Love this service.

  3. Ugh.
Planned obsolescence is a real thing. They’ll love to get your money for a few service calls and then get more money when you decide to buy new, because you feel like you’re throwing money away on repairs.
I gotta say, I’ve had trouble with Whirlpool, LG, Kenmore and GE over the years. I’ve been on forums where people complained about their Sub-Zeros, Boschs, and KitchenAids. I think the only thing to do is read reviews and narrow it down. After that, maybe you’ll get lucky.
I know several people who put the old fridge in the basement or the garage and those have out-lived new ones!
The new ones are more energy efficient, which saves you money, but the older ones were built to last, so it’s a toss up.
That stove issue is ridiculous. I’m so sorry about your stove top. Only a clean rag would never make it long at my house. Nope, I’m a real person who cooks real food for real people. Real messes occur accordingly.

    1. Oh so true about “they just don’t make things to last like they used to” Prices have gone way up and the quality has gone way down. And I too cook for a family of 6 therefore I know just how big messes get on that stove and sometimes don’t get cleaned up until the next morning when it’s stuck on there. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.

  4. I’m so glad you have written this post. We were tortured with our Whirlpool dishwasher. It stopped working after 2 months! Whirlpool sent out a repairman who replaced something that didn’t fix it then he came again and replaced something else that didn’t fix it…this went over the space of a month meanwhile I had no dishwasher. Then after many phone calls and arguments, they finally replaced the whole dishwasher only for it to stop working again!!! I was told on the phone that the reason was the soap I was using was too soapy. On the door it said “whirlpool recommends Finish” and I was using Finish. But I was told I couldn’t use Finish Powerball, it had to be 3 in 1 which doesn’t exist anymore – soaps are all ultimate, powerball, 10 in 1 etc. So for my dishwasher to run I had to buy really old soap which was hard to find because people want more than 3 types of cleaning action. Anyway, after a year of using the special soap, it broke down again and we had to pay to fix it and this happened again and again until it was 5 years old and completely broke down & we were unwilling to put more money into it. We spent the initial cost plus over 300euros in repairs for a machine that was totally useless. I will never buy a whirlpool product again! I was disgusted and disappointed by their lack of customer service. If I was blogging when this happened I’d have spread the word too. I’m going to share your post across my social media!

    1. Please do! I just want people to be warned how awful their products are and how they really don’t care about how their customers feel. I went the the whirlpool USA Twitter page and you should see all the complaints! I just started tagging the person and plugging in my letter. I had over 200 hits on the letter yesterday 🙂

  5. Thanks so much for sharing this, I will steer well clear of Whirlpool! It annoys me to death how even the so called leading brands these days think its acceptable to make shoddy products! These appliances should last years, not months! And their customer service sounds like a treat! #brillblogspots

    1. All they keep emailing me is to give them my information instead of following through with the info that is already in their computer. It’s so annoying. I will keep plugging this letter where ever I can and have friends sharing it as well. People need to know NOT to buy their product. Thanks for popping over Debbie 😉

  6. I swear it’s impossible to find good customer service anymore, these huge companies don’t seem to care about their reputation because word of mouth marketing can be killer. I will keep in mind not to go with them when looking for appliances. We are going through a similar situation with RC Willey over a couch and I will never buy from them again.

    1. OMG! We had a huge problem with RC Wiley! They don’t stand behind their word! They find some way to get out of their obligation. We currently have a couch that we paid $4,000 for 3 years ago and you would think we got it used. Yes I realize we have 5 kids but come on…if they are going to make cheap stuff then the price needs to reflect that. I do still love my couch but it needs a makeover.

      1. I know I can’t stand them, everything they make is cheap. We just spent a lot of money on a leather sectional our first new couch in 9 years and the motor on the recliner broke after 2 months and they would not swap it out for a new one they said we have to wait for the part which has to come from China! And it wouldn’t be here til June 16th. That was back in March so I’ve had a broken couch for 3 months and still no part.

  7. This is appalling! I was every day with 2 kids I can only imagine what you guys do, glad you got a shiny new one and I hope whirlpool pulls their finger out to do SOMETHING.

Thanks for linking up with #effitfriday

    1. I have decided that if they do take care of the problem in some way (which is hopeful and probably far fetched) but if they do pull their finger out and fix it then I will donate that washing machine to a family here in my town that is in need. At least then something good will have come out of a bad situation. Thanks so much for hosting an awesome linky!

  8. Appalling customer service seems to be getting more and more standard these days unfortunately! I’ve recently had problems with Vodafone, Expedia and Amazon all 3 had terrible customer service. I feel your pain and I hope you get this sorted out.

    1. Wow Amazon? I usually have great experiences with them but it’s been awhile since I’ve had to deal with them so who knows. I just don’t understand why they can’t make a better product …oh I know why cause most of the parts are “made in China” I’m sure that 1500 washer I bought 14 months ago only cost 100 to build …it’s financial rape to we the consumer. Thanks for popping over and saying hello 🙂

  9. Sooooo, are you pissed off? Haha! Jokes, jokes. I can easily write that while I sit behind a computer screen. I actually have never had a Whirlpool product, and now after your post, I won’t ever get one. I hope you complained Trista! I really hope you did. Put this post all up on their facebook page and everything! It’s the only way you can get through to these big companies. Even if they do nothing, at least you have warned everyone else in the world.

Why don’t you burn the machine, and then send it to them in the mail. That will send them a message. Or maybe I am just psycho. xo

    1. Lol that’s an idea! Oh I have been blowing up all their Twitter pages with my letter and tagging them everywhere I can with the letter. I find every complaint on their site and tag that person and whirlpool with my story …I know people are reading it …it’s had over 300 hits on it since I posted it…and I will continue to do so 🙂 **shakes fist in the air** thanks for popping over and saying hello 😉

  10. Trista-

This is Hal with Phillips Home Furnishings. Sorry you are having problems with your washer! I wish I could get a tech out there sooner to get you taken care of.

If you like, we can get you a loaner washer until you get yours fixed?

Just call Leslie at the store and she can arrange that for you if you like. 775-623-3060

    1. Hal, I am so not upset with you guys in any way. You have always been so good to us and we will gladly still shop at your store. We bought a new washer. I am trying to get Whirlpool to stand behind their product. A washing machine should last more then 14 months and that is no fault of yours.

    1. We went and bought a new one. I am plugging my letter in where ever I can in hopes that they will try to make things right and still fix it. If they do so then I will donate it to a family in need here in my town.

  11. It’s shocking how modern appliances are just not made to last, disposable plastic parts that can’t handle the stresses of use, and all designed to last the minimum (usually just outside warranty) rather than as long as possible.

  12. I find it fascinating that Kenmore, made by Whirlpool for Sears, is such better quality. I guess Sears doesn’t want their name dragged through the mud even as Whirlpool drops its standards. Thanks for linking to #TwinklyTuesday!
