Recently I was contacted by Joel Cordle over at hillcountrypdo.com to do a guest post about taking care of our pearly whites!  Since I am all about my dental hygiene, I of course said YES!

What is the importance of hygiene to our health? The answer is simple. Hygiene and health is interdependent that one cannot complete exist without the other. The saying “cleanliness is next to godliness” further solidifies that idea. Maintaining cleanliness with your body and with your surroundings is an integral way to stay healthy. Apparently, exercise and the right diet is not enough.
We all learned the basics of hygiene since kindergarten, so allow us to give you a review on those simple and (what should be) regular routines for us. Here are 7 tips for everyone on how to maintain health and good dental hygiene.
Wash hands frequently.
Hand-washing is the first and most basic rule to maintain hygiene. Every minute, our hands are exposed and attacked by millions of germs and bacteria that can affect our health. Washing our hands frequently can prevent these germs from spreading.
Take a bath regularly.
Although the rest of your body is not exposed to germs as much as the hands are, your body still needs regular cleaning to remove any germs that accumulated around it. Taking a bath regularly is an important way to maintain hygiene.
Brush teeth at least twice a day.

As what all orthodontist and dentists will tell you, to ensure that your dental health stays in shape, you should brush at least two times every day – once in the morning when you wake up and once at night before you sleep. Brushing the teeth is the first step to maintaining a good dental hygiene.
Clean your tongue.
The tongue is exposed to many types of bacteria, germs and all the food you eat all day. You will notice that your tongue’s color will change with the color of the food you eat. Maintain your dental hygiene by cleaning your tongue regularly by using your toothbrush (brush gently) or your finger.
Use mouthwash.
Apparently, brushing and cleaning your tongue is not enough to make sure that your dental hygiene is completely maintained. There are areas in your mouth that toothbrush bristles cannot reach and can only be cleaned by liquid cleaning agents. This is where a mouthwash will come in handy. Use mouthwash after brushing your teeth to flush out the remaining bacteria in the mouth.
Keep your nails clean.
Nails are also a representation of our hygiene. Not to mention, dirty nails will risk you to ingest bacteria when you eat. Make sure that you always cut your nails or clean off the dirt that is collected in your nails.
Know the specifics of proper hygiene for men and for women.
Hygiene, especially for our genital areas, is different between men and women. Know the specifics and basics in cleaning your private parts to prevent bacteria-caused illnesses and to maintain proper hygiene.

Awareness and practice of the simple acts that can maintain our health and dental hygiene can go a long way for us. Be sure to always prioritize your personal hygiene to prevent illnesses and to stay healthy and happy.

  1. I would also note that it is important to have your regular dental visits every six months to get your teeth professionally cleaned and looked at by the dentist to ensure that there are no issues present. Thanks for sharing!
