We are past the middle of January and I am still in the fitness game!  Can I get a woo hoo! **woo hoo**

Let me just start by saying that I have been feeling so much better lately that it’s almost like I am on some kind of a healthy high.  Or maybe that is what it is.  Fitness euphoria.

When I started off at the beginning of the year I weighed myself on Jan 1. And no, I don’t feel like sharing that number with anyone…not even my husband.  Yep that’s right…my husband doesn’t even know my weight.  It’s between me and my scale and the scale isn’t talking.

I actually hate scales, and don’t believe that they should have ever even been invented for the simple fact they can be deceiving and upsetting.  First rule to remember about a scale when working out is that you are gaining muscle and muscle weighs more than fat.  This is why it’s better to measure certain parts of your body with a measuring tape.  I could take a dose of my own advice.

After a week of faithfully going to the gym and eating what I felt like was rabbit food and not having a single drop of alcohol, I then returned to my scale only for it to tell me that I hadn’t lost a single pound.  A SINGLE F*CKING POUND!

For me this was almost discouraging enough that I was about to say forget this…throw in the towel…and just eat and drink what I wanted and exercise when I felt like it.  But something in me decided that quitting wasn’t an option.

So I upped my game a bit.  Started taking my working out a little more serious and cutting out any kind of sugar or junk food.  And believe me…when my son’s birthday party came and went and I didn’t give in to a single slice of pizza or even the smallest piece of cake, I gave myself a huge pat on the back and went on about drinking my spinach and cucumber smoothie.

This past Sunday when my Denver Broncos decided to wait until the last 5 minutes of the game to pull their shit together and I wanted an ice cold beer to calm my nerves …I refrained and drank sparkling water with lime and hit the gym instead.

I decided it was time for the scale and I to have another round at it.  So onto it I went yesterday morning and I am ecstatic, blissful, delighted and even rapturous  to say that I am down 15 pounds! 15 POUNDS!  That’s a 10 and 5 pound bag of potatoes!  Gone.

It was like my mind just needed to tell my body… “Hey body! Wake up!  We are trying to get rid of some weight here!”

It was a huge motivational movement to say the least.  And makes me want to up my game even more.  So this week I added 5 more pounds to my weight lifting and have been monitoring my calorie intake very closely.  We shall see what’s in store for my next interlude with the scale.

My stats below aren’t as good as mine from last week but I think that’s because I spent most of last Tuesday sitting in a vehicle on a 6 hour round trip to buy lottery tickets.  Kills the “moving around”.  I want to try and push myself to 90,000 steps for this week!  And if I succeed what should I reward myself with?

Here are a couple of my rewards that are coming up

20 pounds lost = New workout clothes.  The stuff I work out in now, dates back to about the time my Mini Monster B was born…over 6 years ago.  Let’s just say it’s very airy with all the holes in some of my sweat pants.

Feb 7, 2016 ~ Super Bowl Sunday = I will eat and drink what I want for the entire day!  I won’t count a single calorie nor will I be remotely sober.  And I am sure the next day I will complain about how shitty I feel.  This is of course unless my Broncos win the Super Bowl…then regardless of what kind of food and booze hangover I am recovering from…I will be on an ultimate “That’s my f*cking team” high!

3 months of working out = New FitBit.  My FitBit now is the flex and as much as I have enjoyed it…I really want one that keeps track of my heart rate and I just have to glance at it to see my stats rather than opening up the app.

Lemon Balm ~ Grows as a bushy perennial with long stems, leaves, and flowers.5 More Herbs And Their Benefits  It gives off a very strong lemon scent which I myself love the smell of lemons.  Lemon balm is a great antioxidant and helps aid in digestion by stimulating bile flow.  It’s also used to help with stress and anxiety especially in an essential oil form.  For juicing you can use the entire sprig fed through the juicer or you can dry the sprigs and then crush them to put in blended smoothies.

Nutmeg ~ Usually found in an already crushed form, most use it for flavoring in cooking.  Nutmeg is also good for colic, muscle tension and diarrhea.  5 More Herbs And Their BenefitsHaving problems sleeping?  Sprinkle some in some chamomile tea at night,  spray lavender on the sheets and see what happens.

Peppermint ~ This hardy and invasive perennial is very fragrant and produces bright green leaves with small pink, white, and purple flowers.  It is very popular in its ability to squash the common ailment of stomach nausea.  Peppermint also helps with motion sickness, fevers, and even Crohn’s disease.5 More Herbs And Their Benefits

Peppermint oil is also becoming widely used.  It’s used to scent various soaps and cosmetics and also as a flavoring in many beverages.  For me the scent of peppermint always reminds me of this time of year and the Christmas holiday.  I especially love “Peppermint Mocha Creamer” in my coffee!

Some Facts About Dandelion Greens

I had such great feedback from listing the dandelion greens in my last herb post that I decided to do a little more facts about them and a great juice/smoothie recipe using them.

Did you know that 2 cups(110g) of dandelion greens contain the following nutrients:

  • 435 mg of potassium
  • 3.4 mg iron
  • 11150 IU vitamin A
  • .25 mg riboflavin
  • .25 mg of vitamin B6
  • .90 mg of vitamin K
  • 200 mg of calcium
  • 4 grams of fiber
  • 3 grams of protein
  • 84 mg of sodium
  • 38.5 mg of vitamin C
  • 3.75 mg of vitamin E

That is a whole lot of nutrients from something that grows in the lawn and is considered a weed!  They are known to have purifying effects on the blood and liver.  Just make sure if you are picking them from the wild that they are free of any pesticides or animal feces.  They are also very bitter so juice them with other tastier greens such as spinach or kale.  Below I have listed a recipe.

  • 2 cups dandelion greens
  • 3-4 pitted dates
  • 2 tbsp raw almond butter
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries

Add first two of the ingredients to the blender and blend on high until smooth and very tiny particles remain while adding the coconut water as need to blend it really well.  Then add the fruit and almond butter last and blend until your desired texture.  The dates help disguise the bitterness of the dandelion.  This is a great blend of healthy fats and purification for your liver.  Therefore after a night of too many cocktails…pop this in the blender for breakfast and reap the rewards!

Dandelion Leaf ~ I have used this for juicing many times but make sure to only use a small amount for it has a very bitter taste.  It aids in liver diseases such as hepatitis and jaundice.  It helps promote kidney health as well.  It is easily found in most supermarkets in the produce section.

Echinacea ~ This herb is great for boosting your immune system and I usually buy it in a tea bag form at the grocery store.  I have also used it in capsule form when I start to feel my throat getting scratchy.  If grown in a garden, as a perennial, you may use all the parts of the plant for juicing.  Echinacea helps aid with respiratory and urinary infections.  It’s usually found in dry form in some alternative health food stores.

Garlic ~ Not only for keeping vampires at bay this herb is also used to aid in the inhibition of cancer cells forming.  Garlic also helps reduce (LDL) cholesterol and can even keep the common cold at bay.  I use it in just about everything I cook and if you throw several cloves of it along with some basil, olive oil, and a little fresh juice of a lemon it makes a great pesto.

Ginger ~ I will never forget the first time I tried a bite of fresh ginger…I thought someone had just sprayed a can of Pledge dusting spray in my mouth.  They usually serve it in raw form when eating at a sushi restaurant.  Now, I love the taste of it.  Guess you could say it was an acquired taste.  It’s used in a root form and aids with headaches, upset stomach(especially morning sickness).  It helps the digestive system by increasing the absorption of several nutrients.

In juicing just peel the outer layer off (unless using organic then feel free to use the peel as well) then chop a couple tiny pieces and throw in the juicer.  If wanting to help with upset stomach grate a good amount into a small pot of water and boil.  Then strain and sip like tea.

Lavender ~ A great herb for juicing in which all parts of the plant can be used.  Lavender is used in many teas as a relaxant but can also help with stress, insomnia, and in some cases even depression.

It helps with relaxation and in the form of an essential oil, you can put a couple drops on your child’s pillow case to help them with a peaceful sleep.  It is found in most alternative health food stores in dried form.  Can also be grown in a garden from June through the fall depending on temperature of your climate.  It also makes a beautiful coverage for landscaping.

Green Juicing ~ Week 1

For this segment of my juicing extravaganza I thought I would share with you the making of green juice.  If you don’t have a juicer I highly recommend that you get one.  I have a Breville Fountain Juicer and it works fabulously.  It is sold on Amazon for $80.  It is my first juicer and I have had it for a few years now but granted it has been in the cabinet for quite some time and wasn’t in use.  I have no idea why I ever stopped juicing.  It truly gives me more energy then coffee.

For this particular round of juice I used:

  • 1/2 of an english cucumber
  • 2 cups of Organic Kale
  • 2 cups of Organic Spinach
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper (cause it was about to go bad and I hate wasting food)
  • 1 Yellow Bell Pepper (from my garden)
  • 2 small ripe tomatoes (from my garden)
  • 3 stalks of celery
  • 1 green apple (gives it a little sweetness)

You feed the entire vegetable or fruit into the juicer.  Yes the core of the apple and all!

Now I will assure you that the taste is not one that is acquired by everyone.  My husband has tried it a few times and just can’t seem to bring himself to drink it.  I like mine over ice.  A straw always helps in the aid of getting it down as well.  I actually like the taste so no straw needed here…just ice.

I pass the pulp through the juicer two more times and actually end up getting a lot more juice.

There is tons of fiber in the pulp that is left over after juicing.  I usually throw it in with some eggs and scramble them, then add a few slices of avacado on top and even the mini-monsters eat it up!  You can also throw it in a batch of muffins or sweet breads, if you make them. I have also made some dinner style pancakes using the pulp.  Just blend it into the final stage of mixing.  I like mine best with eggs.  Probably because I am not much of a baker.

You can also use it for compost in your garden or if you have chickens….THEY LOVE IT!

5 Uses For Various Herbs ~ Part 1

Starting Monday I am going to get out my juicer, scrub dust it off, and get back into the habit of getting on track again.  It’s been a hot and busy summer and that’s about the only excuse I have as to why I have sat on my lazy ass not been staying on track.

In the weeks to come for #foodpornthursdays I am going to be sharing uses for various herbs in juicing, in alphabetical order,  and their health benefits.  I will also be testing them out in various juices and smoothies.  So please make sure to check back each week for an herbal update…

*Alfalfa ~ Can be planted as a perennial and easily grows in most parts of North America.  Can also be found as sprouted seeds in most supermarkets.

Alfalfa can be used as a great resource of nutrition and helps promote strong teeth, bones, and connective tissue.  It also contains large amounts of chlorophyll which can heal wounds and even generate new skin growth. It can be used whole or dried in juicing and smoothies.  And as we all know, it tastes fabulous on sandwiches!

*Basil ~ Grows with large green leaves and sometimes topped with a stalk shape of flowers, which all can be used.  It helps in soothing digestion and stimulates the adrenal gland.  You can get it in fresh or dried form. I planted some in the early summer and it has absolutely taken over half of one of my garden boxes. I put it in just about everything these days. Can be used in it’s entire form for juicing, smoothies and even cooking.

*Catnip ~ also known as the cat’s meow marijuana weed pot favorite comes with upright branched stems of leaves and white flowers in a tube-like shape.

It can be used to lower fevers and is often taken before bedtime to aid with sleep.  Therefore I wouldn’t use it in a morning juice when looking for energy.  Catnip can also be used for diarrhea, upset stomach, and even colic.  It can be grown but usually it’s found in dried form in health stores.

Catnip can be used in the form of a tea to help with ailments such as menstrual cramps, indigestion, nervous conditions, hives, and even the common cold.

*Cinnamon ~ Most commonly known to be sprinkled on top of our lattes from the local coffee shop, cinnamon comes from the inner bark of a laurel-like tree.  It can be found in stick or powdered form in most supermarkets.  It has been known to aid in digestion and irritable bowel syndrome.  Also can help relieve upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea.  Recent studies have shown it to aid in the help of lowering cholesterol and even blood sugar.

*Cumin ~ An inflorescence of small pink or white flowers, with prickly oval seeds, which also derives from the parsley family.  It is most commonly used in Spanish, Mexican, and Indian cuisine and the aroma is very distinctive. Cumin helps aid with digestion, an antispasmodic and has even been known to increase milk supply in breastfeeding mothers.  It can also be used in a glass of water to gargle with if you have laryngitis.  It comes either in a seed or powdered form in most grocery stores.

What Do You Mean My Kid Has MRSA?

A few days ago I noticed that 2 of my 3 toddlers had sores on their noses.  My first thought was that we had been on vacation and in the moist ocean air and upon returning to the desert they just got really dry.  But as it wasn’t looking any better and actually started to move from one nostril to another…literally overnight…I knew it was time for a trip to the doctor.

After the doctor said MRSA…I don’t remember much after that.  I remember sitting there thinking how the hell did this happen? I am always telling my kids to wash their hands.  When I take my girls into a public restroom I won’t let them touch ANYTHING! And we still all scrub our hands when we are done and I open the door with a towel before chucking it in the trash.germs antibacterial MRSA kids health

I clean my house regularly and wipe all the doorknobs and light fixtures with a bleached rag.  My kids take baths and showers and practice as good of hygiene as kids at their age can.  Mind you…I have never been one of those mothers that is spraying every place she goes with an antibacterial spray or carrying bottles of hand sanitizer on her belt loops….but now I am.

After coming out of the fog of the doctor saying those dreadful words I scooped up my kids, dropped them off at home with daddy, and off to Wal-Mart I went where I spent $80 on anything and everything from Lysol to 10 bottles of hand sanitizer.antibacterial MRSA  I also picked up 2 tubes of prescribed antibiotic ointment and some children’s probiotics which were recommended by the doctor.

The doctor informed me that I needed to cut their fingernails pretty much to the quick and to apply the ointment up their noses and onto the tips of their fingers…3 to 4 times a day.  And to keep them from coming in contact with each other since my 4 year old doesn’t have any signs of it.  Do you know how hard it is to keep 3 toddlers from touching their faces and each other?!?!?  She wouldn’t know cause her kids were 10 years apart! germs germ-X antibacterial hand sanitizer MRSA health kids

Now of course I did as every mother does and started looking up everything about MRSA on the internet.  To the point where I just had to stop because the more I read the more it all started to scare the shit out of me.  The only thing that was helpful in reading is that they could have gotten it ANYWHERE! And all they had to do was touch the infected area and then touch their face.  Not that it’s good news but it made me feel a little relieved in knowing that it wasn’t my fault.
